Hormones Can Make a Mess of Your Mental Health at Work

Hormones Can Make a Mess of Your Mental Health at Work

Most, if not all women, have experienced a turn for the worse mental health when that “time” of the month clocks on their calendar. Their moods dip, anxiety shoots up, and thoughts become disturbingly dark.

But hormonal change does not only affects the mind of the women, men can also experience hormonal effects such as anger and depression.

Such mental health problems caused by changes in our hormones can greatly affect our mood and even our performance at work. Let us then determine the links between our mind and our fluctuating hormones and what can be their concerning effects to your job.

The Mental-Hormone Links

  • Let’s first look at PMS, a favorite joke of comedians but totally not a laughing matter for the women who suffer with it. There are different reasons why some women sail through their monthly cycle with no or only a few symptoms and why others struggle every month experiencing depression, fatigue, and anxiety. Some of these reasons are nutrition, genetics, and yes – hormone balance.

Some women find it hard to concentrate on their jobs that they even call in sick before or during their period. If you are on your period during work deadlines but concentration is not easy, it will be better if you will break large projects into smaller and shorter tasks. You can also go on frequent breaks to walk around or stretch.

  • Other key points where mind and hormones intersect are pregnancy and post-partum. Soon to be mommies usually encounter significant depression while being pregnant or after giving birth (post-partum depression). Though many consider moodiness and rollercoaster emotions are common and normal.

Thus, work cannot be avoided during and after pregnancy even if you suffer from several mental health. If your depression is giving you a difficult time in the office by crying and outbursting your emotions every now and then, admit first to yourself that you are depressed. By recognizing what you are going through, you can easily talk to a doctor and ask for his/her help.

  • The next key point of the mood-hormone link which is widely recognized but not fully-understood is known as “menopause”. We are only enclosed to the definition of menopause as the point at which women stops having their periods for a period of 1 year and it usually happens to them at the age of 51 (average in the US). We aren’t aware that the symptoms of menopause, erratic periods, hot flashes, brain fog, and sex drive changes occur during the time before menopause. This is called perimenopause wherein there is already a decline in estrogens and progesterone or they go up and down unpredictably. Many women also don’t know that perimenopause can start as early as their late thirties.

Work is still inevitable at this age and even if you reach 51, you cannot just simply quit work just because you are experiencing symptoms of a mind-hormone link. The best way to address perimenopause indications is to have an open communication with your boss and your team. Telling them what you are going through can seriously help in reducing your stress in the office due to erratic periods or hot flashes. They can also support you and handle your tasks in case you will need to take a day off.

  • There are also other imbalances in our hormones that can cause various symptoms at any point in life. These are progesterone deficiency, estrogen insufficiency or abundance, as well as testosterone deficiency. The alpha males, when having too many estrogen in their body, can experience despair and mood swings. If in case they will have too little testosterone, they can suffer from despair, fatigue, low sex drive, and they can even gain some weight. While in women, it is a more popular fact that sex hormone imbalances can be the reason for a wide range of mental health symptoms.

If you usually bring your work home or extend some time at night in the office, you need to change your habits and set some boundaries. Staying late at work will not be helpful and can only worsen your despair or fatigue. Spend a little time exercising to make you feel active or join a yoga class for meditation and breathing exercise.

What you should remember

Ignoring your symptoms or medications such as antidepressants and anti-anxiety medicines are not your immediate answers to mental health issues brought about by hormonal changes. If at work or not, you should learn to nurture yourself with good nutrition, surround yourself with people who truly care, and ask your physician to thoroughly assess your symptoms.  Hormonal imbalances and its effects can be addressed through the help of your family, friends, and professionals and in the end, not make a mess of your mind at home or at your job.

Country Dance Lessons Improve Style

Country Dance Lessons Improve Style

Source: pixabay.com

Country dance lessons in Houston offer a great way of learning the various styles of country dances. These days, the country/western two-step, which is often called the Texas two-step is a popular dance. It is danced to country music in the one-two, one-two, slide-shuffle steps. Country music with a fiddle and a guitar is most suitable for this style of dancing. It is danced to music with a 4/4-time signature.

The steps of two-step are quite the same as the international fox-trot and most of the dances in Texas are a deviation from it. One has to take two long steps and a step-close step to do this dance. If you move the steps faster, it is the Texas shuffle or a Texas double shuffle.

To start with the dance the male partner has to put his right hand under the left shoulder of the female partner.  To be exact, the hand is to be placed on the upper part of the shoulder blade. The lady then takes her left arm and puts it on the top of the right arm of her partner. It has to be precisely just below the shoulder and just above the bicep. Then his left hand will hold the right hand of his partner in a comfortable manner right at the shoulder level. This is the basic couple dance hold and there could be several variations to it as well. When the dance movement begins the man can start with his left while the lady with her right step. The dance is made up of a serious of slow and quick steps. The quick step is a step for one beat while the slow is a step for two beats.

The steps of the dance have to be timed with music beats. The timing is 2 quicks and 2 slows and then the walking pattern. When the man steps forward the lady goes backward with her steps. The two-step is a line of dance that moves counterclockwise. You cannot move clockwise when doing this dance. There is also some etiquette that dancers need to follow while on the dance floor. If people are already in line doing the two-step you can always two-step around the outside of the circle. Those who are dancing fast can stay around the outside of the circle. If you are dancing slow, it is okay to move towards the middle of the circle.

Try to observe people in bars and even in ballroom dancing so it is easy for you to learn by watching. There are many festivals held in Texas that have the blues bash every year. You can attend these festivals with family or friends to dance with other participants to gain the harmony in your two-step or shuffle dance movements besides socializing with others.

The two-step is also related to the polka, the Texas waltz, and the jitterbug. These partner dances have a leader played by the man and a follower which is always the female partner. All the movements and patterns of the dance are initiated by the leader and the lady follows through. When the dance is more like in a circle the leader is towards the inside of the circle. Other dance positions related to the two-step include Sweetheart, Shadow, Wrap, Skater, Promenade, and Reverse Promenade.

Texas Polka includes three steps: a quick step, a quick step, and then a slow step. It is s danced to music with a 2/4 or a 4/4-time signature. It is a very easy dance with smooth movements that are lively, joyous and a bit bouncy.  Dancers need to achieve a swift gliding motion that is well timed to music.  The dance is said to have its root in the European and Mexican dance history and was also seen in Germany and Hungary during the 1800s. Couples take two steps together and then walk. It is easy to dance to a wide range of tempos ranging from 130 bpm to over 200 bpm. The better dancers can dance to 185 bpm.

Two-steps can be started with either the two quick steps or the two slow steps. It all depends on the local customs. The leader always steps forward with the left foot while the follower moves back.  The quick step can be a full stride where one foot passes the other on each step. With a faster beat, the quick step can turn into a shuffle as well. This style has its root in the Foxtrot while other variations include the Shadow dance.

7 Best Health-Boosting Vitamins & Supplements for Women in Their 30s

7 Best Health-Boosting Vitamins & Supplements for Women in Their 30s

Women in their 30s have diverse biological needs and health goals. And as you focus more on being active, staying healthy and aging well, taking vitamins and health supplements becomes essential.

But with so many choices available, choosing the right vitamins and supplements can be quite an overwhelming decision. To help you get started, here’s your guide in picking out which supplements are the most appropriate for your age.

1. Vitamin A

A deficiency in vitamin A can cause anemia, birth defects and your immune system to poorly function. Taking vitamin A supplements helps promote healthy skin, good vision and strong teeth. Natural food sources include carrots, kale, sweet potatoes and liver.

The recommended daily dosage for vitamin A is 2,333 IU. Make sure to avoid consuming this supplement excessively as it can affect bone health and lead to other health problems.

2. Folate, Folic Acid or Vitamin B9

If you are of childbearing age, it’s vital to increase your intake of the B vitamin folate which is also known as “folic acid” in synthetic form. Folate promotes healthy cell and tissue growth. It’s also good for the heart, and helps you maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

If you’re planning to get pregnant, folic acid is a key ingredient in your prenatal vitamins. It reduces the risk of neural-tube defects in the fetus as well as low birth weight in babies.

In fact, it’s more beneficial to start supplementing with them up to six months before the prenatal period, and throughout the pregnancy to reduce the risk of any birth defects.

3. Omega-3

Omega-3 can come from both plant and animal sources such as chia seeds, Brussels sprouts, walnut, salmon, egg yolks and liver, which means you definitely have options even if you are vegan. Omega-3 is known to prevent heart disease, arthritis, stroke, cancer and memory loss. And all fatty acids that it contains are essential for the normal functioning of bodily tissues.

Women with a deficiency in omega-3 can consider taking supplements to compensate for inadequate omega-3 in their diet.

4. Iron

Women who are in their 30s are at greater risk for having iron deficiency. This is quite true for women who are pregnant or experiencing heavy menstrual flow. Iron deficiency may cause you to feel fatigued and increase your risk for infection.

To avoid iron deficiency issues, you should strive for at least 18 milligrams of iron each day and, if you’re pregnant, 27 milligrams. Taking iron supplements can greatly help but you also have to be careful not to consume it in excess. Iron overdose can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and other symptoms.

5. Vitamin C and E

At the age of 30, fine lines, thinning skin and other signs of aging start to emerge. Good thing there are vitamins that can help slow down the skin’s aging process. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that can fight free radicals which contribute to aging and diseases.

Aim for at least 15 milligrams of vitamin E per day to boost immunity and decrease the signs of aging. Also, take vitamin C to ease the absorption of vitamin E. Get at least 75 milligrams of vitamin C per day.

6. Vitamin D

Women who have infrequent exposure to the sun may have vitamin D deficiency. When you have inadequate levels of vitamin D, it will be difficult for your body to absorb calcium. This may lead to a poor immune system, osteoporosis and high blood pressure.

Besides sunlight, a good source of vitamin D are supplements and vitamin D-fortified milk. A 30-year-old woman’s recommended dosage for vitamin D is 5 mcg per day.

7. Calcium

Once you reach 30, you should start thinking about preventing debilitating health conditions such as osteoporosis. You can keep your bones strong by making sure you get an adequate amount of calcium. The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends that women below 50 get at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day.

If you are pregnant, your calcium dosage will increase to 1,200 or 1,500 milligrams each day. Take note that your body also needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, so make sure you get 400 IU per day. Consuming vitamin D and calcium together will prevent bone loss related to menopause.

You don’t have to be at the age of 30 to start considering supplementation to ensure you get your daily dose of vitamins and other nutrients. In fact, people of all ages have to ensure that they’re getting all the nutrients they need every day. And though you may think that old age is still far away, you have to begin taking precautions now to ensure you stay healthy as you age.

How Many Songs Can You Play (with the Chords You Know)?

How Many Songs Can You Play (with the Chords You Know)?

Have you ever found yourself playing the same song again and again? If so, you’re not alone. This is a common problem for beginners on the guitar and ukulele. The song in question doesn’t even have to be a hard one. In fact, it can (and should) be easy.

But practicing the same song can get pretty boring after awhile.

For example, “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley is a classic beginner song that’s playable with G, C, and D. But even though it’s a simple tune, you still need to invest a lot of time and repetition before you see any real improvement. And unfortunately, that repetition is unavoidable. If you don’t cycle through “Three Little Birds” enough times, you won’t get better.

Fortunately, the fix is simple.

Practice Other Songs That Also Use G, C, and D

Instead of practicing one song, you can choose others that use the same chords. If you can play “Three Little Birds,” then you can also play the following 4 songs:

  1. “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash
  2. “La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens
  3. “Wild Thing” by the Troggs
  4. “Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins (and Elvis)

They all use the same chords, but each of these songs has a different melody, a different tempo, and a different backstory. So you have more variety when you practice. And it’s a lot harder for boredom to set in.

What if you’re not a fan of these somewhat dated examples? Maybe you like more modern songs (by artists who are actually still alive). Not a problem. If you Google “3-chord” or “4-chord” songs, you’ll find lots of online lists. And you can wade through them to find practice tunes that resonate with you.

That’s certainly one option. And if you’re committed to getting better, this type of online research may be worth the investment. But there’s a new search engine that can speed up this entire process for you.

A Much Faster Way to Find Beginner Songs

Although still in beta, the Chord Genome Project is a free tool that shows you all the songs you can play with the chords you already know. If you do a search of G, C, and D, for example, you’ll find almost 400 individual easy 3-chord songs for the ukulele and guitar. Better still, all the results are sortable by genre and decade. So if you’re looking for songs by living, breathing musicians, you’re sure to find some.

And you’re not limited to G, C, and D. For example, a lot of newbies start with:

  • A, D, E (on the guitar)
  • C, F, G (on the ukulele)

Plug those in and see what comes out. You can also do searches for songs with 4, 10, or even 20 chords. So this music search engine isn’t strictly for beginners.

If you’re stuck in a rut and dying of boredom, the Chord Genome Project is definitely worth checking out. The site has a demo version (there’s no signup required). But the results are limited, and unfortunately, you can’t sort by genre or year. The real magic happens once you register for a free account (signup is required). There’s also a paid version with even more bells & whistles.

To start finding easy songs to play on the guitar and ukulele, head over to the Chord Genome Project, and start jamming.

Be mindful of the heat.

Extreme temperatures can cause issues like heatstroke. If you live in or are traveling to a particularly hot area, make sure you take extra precautions. Stay hydrated, seek out shade, and make sure you rest if you feel dizzy. Don’t ever leave children or animals in a hot car or building, and make sure you carry water with you at all times.
