10 Reasons Why You Should Get Your Baby Baptized–Even If You Are Not Religious

10 Reasons Why You Should Get Your Baby Baptized--Even If You Are Not Religious

As a new parent, you’ve done all sorts of research on how to give your baby the best of everything.

You know which crib to buy, your parenting style, and you’ve even studied up on how to make your own baby food.

One thing you’ve neglected?

The spiritual side of your child’s life. After all, you’ve never exactly been the religious type.

But even if you’re not a person of faith, we think you should still consider getting your child baptized.

Why?

Keep on reading this post to find out.

From having a great excuse to dress up and take photos to reconnect with your own beliefs, you might be surprised by all that baptism can offer you.

1. It’s a Photo Opportunity

Why are babies baptized?

Traditionally, it’s so their souls can make it into heaven when they pass away. Especially as a baby can’t yet decide if they’d like to become a member of the church, parents baptize their child to ensure that they will go to heaven.

It’s also a way to show Churches that you have a strong commitment to your faith.

But what if you’re not the religious type?

Then we suggest getting your baby baptized because it’s an awesome photo opportunity.

The truth is that we all feel as though we just can’t take too many photos of our children. And they’ll only be small for so long. This is an especially great photo opportunity as members of your family, friends, and your community will be present.

Think of it as the baby equivalent of the wedding photo set.

2. You Can Name a Godparent

Deciding if a baby getting baptized is really the route you want to go down?

If so, consider it as an opportunity to publicly name a godparent.

Godparents are people that promise to take in your baby if something happens to you. But even if you and your partner live long and happy lives (and we’re sure you will!) there are other reasons to name a godparent.

Godparents play a vital role in a child’s upbringing. They can answer questions that a child might not feel comfortable asking their own parents. They offer guidance and different perspectives to your child. They can even take on babysitting duty when you just need a night off.

3. It’s a Reason for a Family Gathering

When was the last time you had all of your family together in one place?

Even during holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, it can be tough to arrange everyone’s schedules.

But everyone is always eager to see a baby–so consider a baptism a kind of family reunion. It’s an awesome way to reconnect with relatives you haven’t seen in a while.

Just make sure you create a seating chart to keep relatives that don’t exactly see eye-to-eye apart.

4. It Puts Religious Relatives at Ease

Why do babies get baptized?

Sometimes, it’s just to help keep peace in the family.

Even if you’re not religious yourselves, the truth is that there are people in your family who probably are. Some of them may even be a bit more devout than you’re comfortable with.

While we’d never encourage you to do something that goes against your beliefs, consider getting your baby baptized if doing so isn’t a big deal to you, but really matters to another relative.

It’s much better than having to hear them worry about your baby’s soul at every family gathering for the rest of your life.

5. You’ll Get Insight into What You Want for Your Child

We know that you’ve already given some serious thought to your parenting goals, styles, and what you’d like for your child’s future.

But during the baptism process, you’ll often have the chance to explore these issues on a much deeper level. You might even encounter new questions that you’d never even given much thought to before.

These don’t just have to do with your child’s spiritual development. You and your partner can discuss roles and responsibilities. You can even get insight from a spiritual leader about what works and what doesn’t.

You don’t have to be religious to see the benefits of good communication.

6. You Tap into Your Local Community

About half of all Americans say that they go to church with regularity, anywhere from every week to a few times per month.

Especially if you’ve just moved to a new city, the truth is that the church is a great place to meet people. Even if you’re not religious, you might be surprised by how genuinely accepting people that go to church can be.

In other words?

The fire and brimstone days are long gone.

Many churches support gay marriage and adoption, a woman’s right to choose and other issues that many people assume are too “controversial” for the church.

Don’t let your fear of being judged force you to miss out on connecting with an amazing and kind group of people. After all, it takes a village to raise a child. You’re going to need some help from your neighbors.

7. Two Words: Christening Outfit

Another reason to get your baby baptized?

Because it’s the perfect excuse to go all out on your baby’s christening outfit–and your own.

If you’re obsessed with all things fashion, then we know you’ll love the frills and lace associated with traditional christening outfits. Many people even have their child’s christening outfit made by a local designer.

This way, you can get exactly what you want.

Don’t be afraid to match outfits with your baby, either.

In closing: any time you have an opportunity to dress your baby in a bonnet, you should always take it. A baptism provides that opportunity.

8. Reconnect to Your Spirituality

OK, so it’s definitely been a while since you went to church.

While you’re not super sold on the idea of God, the truth is that you can see the benefit of spirituality.

Plus, you’d be lying if you said having a child didn’t make you rethink a few things when it comes to your faith. You feel like maybe you should give church another shot.

Even if you still don’t care for it, you’ll have your perspectives challenged and meet new people. And if you do like it? You’ve just found an awesome way to get back in touch with your spiritual side.

Getting a baby baptized is a great way to put your toe back into the waters of faith.

9. See the Support You Have

When you have a baby, it’s so easy to feel like you’re in this on your own.

Especially if you stay at home with your child, you can sometimes end up feeling seriously isolated. There’s something really special about being able to stand up in front of a room of people who support you.

In some cases, they may even be other parents who can empathize with you on a deeper level. Or, they could be people that don’t have kids but want to help you out in any way they can.

Baptism is a great reminder that you do have people you can ask for help when things get out of hand. You should take advantage of that.

10. “Just in Case”

At the end of the day, whether or not you believe in God, the fact of the matter is that none of us really know for sure.

When you have a child, you might be surprised to find that you’re giving your belief in the afterlife a closer look. You’re just not in a place where you’re willing to take any chances when it comes to your child’s soul.

Yes, it might sound a little bit silly, but the truth is that tons of parents baptize their children “just in case.” After all, better safe than sorry, especially when it comes to the afterlife.

Anything that helps you to keep your mind at ease as a new parent is always a smart move.

Never Wake a Sleeping Child, but What Should They Sleep In? The Case for Pack N Plays Vs. Classic Cribs

Never Wake a Sleeping Child, but What Should They Sleep In The Case for Pack N Plays Vs. Classic Cribs

Are you about to become a parent? Congrats!

Welcoming a new addition the family is an exciting time filled with lots of decision making.

You want to keep your baby safe and where they sleep plays a big part since newborns spend between 16-17 hours a day sleeping.

There are many options when it comes to the kind of space your baby sleeps in. Between a pack n play, bassinet, and a traditional crib, the cost of these items can begin to add up.

But did you know a Pack n Play can function as all three of these options?

Read on to learn more about why you should opt for a Pack n Play before you invest in a crib.

Where Should Your Baby Sleep?

When you bring your baby home from the hospital, it’s important they sleep in the same room as you for a little while. You’ll want to monitor how they’re doing and they’ll also be waking frequently for feedings and changing.

They should always be placed on their backs, on a flat and firm surface when it comes time to sleep.

Sleeping in the same room as you will reduce their risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) as well.

It is not recommended, however, that your baby sleeps in the bed with you.

So, even if you have decorated a nursery with a full sized crib, your baby will not be spending the beginning of their life sleeping in there.

Because of all the expenses required when the baby first arrives, buying something they won’t even be using right away may not make sense.

Other than a pack and play, here are some options available for your newborn.

Bassinette

Think of bassinettes as a “mini” crib. There are a ton of varieties and models. They can come with mesh sides, thin mattresses, even ones that are battery operated and lul your baby to sleep automatically.

While there’s nothing wrong with a bassinette, it’s not necessarily the wisest investment. Most babies outgrow the bassinette within a couple months or when they reach 15-20 pounds.

Once they’ve outgrown this item, it can’t be repurposed elsewhere and becomes something that just takes up space. It also costs a pretty penny. Some bassinettes can cost over $1,000.

Cradle

Cradles are the halfway point between a bassinette and a crib. They are small like a bassinette but usually made of wood the way a typical crib appears.

The one major difference is they rock back and forth. While this was a classic way to soothe babies and rock them to sleep, they’re now considered a safety hazard because of the risk of a newborn rolling over on their stomach due to the rocking motion.

Aside from the health risks, a cradle will also be easily outgrown so investing in one isn’t necessarily the best financial choice.

Bed Side Co-Sleeper

This is a form of bassinette where one side of the can be lowered down for easy access when it comes time to feed the baby during the night.

Parents can essentially roll over in bed, bring down the side and get to their baby all without getting out of bed themselves. While it can be a convenient option, it can also encourage co-sleeping which is not advised by pediatricians.

Similarly to a bassinette, your baby will outgrow this item quickly and they tend to be on the pricier side.

If you select a co-sleeper, it’s important to remember to put the siding back up after every feeding so you don’t risk suffocation. You also want to be sure the wheels lock in place so it doesn’t roll around.

Crib

At some point, your baby will begin sleeping in a crib. It’s an investment you’ll have to make at some point, as children sleep in them until they become toddlers.

While your newborn could technically sleep in a crib right away, your crib may not fit into your room, thus requiring a smaller, more flexible second option.

Cribs are regulated by with federal guidelines so unless you are using an old crib that was inherited by your family or a hand-me-down from a friend, they should all comply with the most recent requirements.

If you can’t fit a crib into your room when your baby is a newborn, using a pack and play for the first few months is the most convenient and affordable option. Once they’re big enough to spend the night in their own room, you can move them into the crib.

Benefits of a Pack n Play

Most pediatricians will agree that a pack and play is a perfectly safe sleeping place for your baby. These items also fall under a category that needs to be approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

This is not the case for many bassinettes or co-sleepers.

The sides of the Pack n Play are a mesh material and the mattress on the bottom is firm, which is a great step in decreasing the risk of SIDS.

Many pack and plays also come with a bassinette feature which can be placed in the top of the item for babies to sleep higher up. This eliminates the need to purchase a separate bassinette altogether. Learn more about the various kinds of pack and plays available today.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of a Pack n Play is its portability. If you frequently visit relatives, do an at-home workout or want to bring your sleeping baby to your office, having the mobility to travel easily can be very helpful.

They are compact and can be moved from room to room in the house with ease. They also double as a play space for your baby, thus the name. So you’ll use this item for a while, even when they outgrow a bassinette.

Pack n Plays are also much more affordable than a crib and more functional than a bassinette.

Help Your Baby Sleep Well

With the information above, you can decide if a Pack n Play is the right choice for you.

Remember that your baby needs to sleep in the same room with you right away and you’ll need something that can fit into your bedroom and be taken to other locations with ease.

Does Lemon Water Help you Burn Extra Calories?

Does Lemon Water Help you Burn Extra Calories?

The star of super foods lemon has been consumed since time immemorial. From being added as a flavoring agent to being consumed raw, lemon has always had the spotlight. Does lemon water help you burn extra calories? No. Should you be consuming lemon water if you wish to lose weight? Yes. Confused? Read on to find out how and why lemon water could be your friend if you intend to cut down a few inches.

Lemon water in itself has no properties of burning down calories but here are a few reasons why you should be swapping your drinks with it:

  • Lemon has diuretic characteristics – which might make you run to the toilet more often, but in return will help with bloating issues. This more you pee or poop, the more water weight you lose.
  • Lemon water will fasten your metabolism – Lemon water has been observed as a catalyst for metabolism. Water also has properties of accelerating metabolism and inducing thermo-genesis which is a metabolic process where body calories get burnt and produce heat.
  • Lemon water is the lowest on calorie count – As people generally consume one half of a lemon with water the total calories in the drink comes up to only six calories! Whereas other common drinks like fresh fruit juices or sweetened soda drinks can have 20-30 times more the calorie.
  • Lemon water and the magic of pectin – Pectin is a dietary fiber which is water soluble and slows down the digestion process which in return kills the unwanted hunger pangs. It also increases body’s capacity to absorb glucose and leads to lesser cravings.

These were some direct ways in which lemon helps in weight loss. Here are a few indirect and holistic ways in which lemon leads to maintenance and reduction of body weight:

  • Cut down on the slack with an immunity boost – Vitamin C is a core content in lemon juice and is famous for its immunity building properties. One of the main things that helps in weight loss is consistency in exercise. The increased levels of vitamin C will assure a surge of energy even in stressful and dull days and will help regulate your weight more effectively.
  • Lemon juice helps in digestion – A lot of people are now suffering from gas, heartburn and acidity. The medicines that the above said consume contain unwanted sweeteners and lead to not just an unhealthy dependence on medicines but also dull and lethargic attitude. Consumption of lemon juice will help improve digestion naturally by breaking the food down.
  • Lemon water helps reduce body inflammation – Daily consumption of lemon water can help reduce the levels of acids in body. The deposition and build up of uric acid leads to inflammation in joints and can be easily reduced by regular intake of lemon juice.
  • Lemon water can help fight viral infections and kidney stones – Lemon is filled with antioxidant properties and can fight the strongest viral diseases by building the immunity and fighting the disease causing virus. Solid mineral formation in kidneys AKA kidney stones can be fought with lemon as the citrate in lemon juice helps to prevent some compounds from combining with calcium and hence preventing stones.

A word of caution – People with severe acidity and reflux issues should monitor the intake of lemon as it can sometimes aggravate the acid formation leading to more frequent bouts of acidity and acid reflux.

Lemon water might not be the magic potion to burning calories but is definitely an effective companion for weight loss enthusiasts.

7 Best Health-Boosting Vitamins & Supplements for Women in Their 30s

7 Best Health-Boosting Vitamins & Supplements for Women in Their 30s

Women in their 30s have diverse biological needs and health goals. And as you focus more on being active, staying healthy and aging well, taking vitamins and health supplements becomes essential.

But with so many choices available, choosing the right vitamins and supplements can be quite an overwhelming decision. To help you get started, here’s your guide in picking out which supplements are the most appropriate for your age.

1. Vitamin A

A deficiency in vitamin A can cause anemia, birth defects and your immune system to poorly function. Taking vitamin A supplements helps promote healthy skin, good vision and strong teeth. Natural food sources include carrots, kale, sweet potatoes and liver.

The recommended daily dosage for vitamin A is 2,333 IU. Make sure to avoid consuming this supplement excessively as it can affect bone health and lead to other health problems.

2. Folate, Folic Acid or Vitamin B9

If you are of childbearing age, it’s vital to increase your intake of the B vitamin folate which is also known as “folic acid” in synthetic form. Folate promotes healthy cell and tissue growth. It’s also good for the heart, and helps you maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

If you’re planning to get pregnant, folic acid is a key ingredient in your prenatal vitamins. It reduces the risk of neural-tube defects in the fetus as well as low birth weight in babies.

In fact, it’s more beneficial to start supplementing with them up to six months before the prenatal period, and throughout the pregnancy to reduce the risk of any birth defects.

3. Omega-3

Omega-3 can come from both plant and animal sources such as chia seeds, Brussels sprouts, walnut, salmon, egg yolks and liver, which means you definitely have options even if you are vegan. Omega-3 is known to prevent heart disease, arthritis, stroke, cancer and memory loss. And all fatty acids that it contains are essential for the normal functioning of bodily tissues.

Women with a deficiency in omega-3 can consider taking supplements to compensate for inadequate omega-3 in their diet.

4. Iron

Women who are in their 30s are at greater risk for having iron deficiency. This is quite true for women who are pregnant or experiencing heavy menstrual flow. Iron deficiency may cause you to feel fatigued and increase your risk for infection.

To avoid iron deficiency issues, you should strive for at least 18 milligrams of iron each day and, if you’re pregnant, 27 milligrams. Taking iron supplements can greatly help but you also have to be careful not to consume it in excess. Iron overdose can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and other symptoms.

5. Vitamin C and E

At the age of 30, fine lines, thinning skin and other signs of aging start to emerge. Good thing there are vitamins that can help slow down the skin’s aging process. Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that can fight free radicals which contribute to aging and diseases.

Aim for at least 15 milligrams of vitamin E per day to boost immunity and decrease the signs of aging. Also, take vitamin C to ease the absorption of vitamin E. Get at least 75 milligrams of vitamin C per day.

6. Vitamin D

Women who have infrequent exposure to the sun may have vitamin D deficiency. When you have inadequate levels of vitamin D, it will be difficult for your body to absorb calcium. This may lead to a poor immune system, osteoporosis and high blood pressure.

Besides sunlight, a good source of vitamin D are supplements and vitamin D-fortified milk. A 30-year-old woman’s recommended dosage for vitamin D is 5 mcg per day.

7. Calcium

Once you reach 30, you should start thinking about preventing debilitating health conditions such as osteoporosis. You can keep your bones strong by making sure you get an adequate amount of calcium. The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends that women below 50 get at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day.

If you are pregnant, your calcium dosage will increase to 1,200 or 1,500 milligrams each day. Take note that your body also needs vitamin D to absorb calcium, so make sure you get 400 IU per day. Consuming vitamin D and calcium together will prevent bone loss related to menopause.

You don’t have to be at the age of 30 to start considering supplementation to ensure you get your daily dose of vitamins and other nutrients. In fact, people of all ages have to ensure that they’re getting all the nutrients they need every day. And though you may think that old age is still far away, you have to begin taking precautions now to ensure you stay healthy as you age.

Benefits of HGH for Depression

Benefits of HGH for Depression

If someone told you that ten years from now you were going to be overweight, have thinning hair, wrinkles, sagging skin, joint pains, bodily stiffness, loss of libido, and trouble with your memory you might start to get depressed. That is exactly what happens to some adults who suffer from the symptoms of growth hormone deficiency.

It is no wonder that many adults with GH decline mention depression and impaired quality of life as part of their problems. Not only do the changes associated with low growth hormone levels cause one to suffer emotional turmoil, but since HGH works directly on receptors in the brain, there is also a chemical reason why this deficiency causes depression.

Perhaps that is why the benefits of HGH for depression are so compelling for many adults. Men and women experience this hormonal imbalance equally. Unlike other hormones that change based on menopause and andropause, HGH starts to decline as early as the age of thirty and continues to decrease throughout one’s life.

Low testosterone levels also affect the onset of depression. It affects behavioral function, is responsible for the stability of the psyche to stressful situations, the thirst for life and ambitiousness. The duration and stability of the presented conditions, as well as sharp mood swings, may indicate a change in the level of the hormone in the direction of its decrease. More about how testosterone and depression are related you can read here.

While the body can naturally adjust to changing hormone levels, that is not always the case. For people who have trouble with this adjustment, symptoms of adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) can be unpleasant at the least and debilitating at the worst.

How is HGH good for depression?

If AGHD is present, then the hormonal imbalance in the bloodstream plays havoc on one’s emotional state. HGH therapy puts growth hormone levels back in proper balance so that the brain receives the necessary signals to facilitate positive thoughts and mood.

At the same time, when you use supplemental HGH and depression stems from some of the other symptoms mentioned here, then as those symptoms improve and subsequently disappear, a person’s mood will also begin to change.

Impact of HGH on Mood and Emotions

Research on the use of HGH for depression has already turned up positive results on the impact of human growth hormones on emotional well-being and mood:

Ø  In a 2004 study, 11 out of 18 patients with adult onset growth hormone deficiency had atypical depression at baseline. At one month into treatment, there were significant changes in social isolation and emotional reaction scores. After two months, depression rating scale scores and energy levels significantly improved. Finally, by three months results were seen in sleep disturbance. These results confirmed the benefits of treatment with human growth hormone for depression when AGHD is present.
Ø  A 2014 study showed that AGHD is a debilitating condition that could have a negative impact on an individual if left untreated. AGHD is associated with decreased quality of life, negative body image, weight gain, muscle decline, memory loss, anxiety, social isolation, and impaired concentration. Treatment showed the benefits of HGH for depression to improve body image, reduce stress, increase energy, improve appearance, and reverse feelings of depression.

How HGH Reverses Feelings of Depression

It is not that HGH cures depression; it is that it helps to reverse many of the reasons why the depression has occurred in the first place.

If you are depressed due to the physical changes you notice that are associated with growth hormone deficiency, then increasing HGH levels will reverse those changes, taking away what is causing you to feel depressed.

HGH helps depression in some people by providing a positive stimulus to growth hormone receptors in the brain that can then function properly. Once the changes get underway as a result of beginning HGH depression treatment, adults find that they can resume activities that may have been brushed to the side. From household tasks to hobbies to exercise to social gatherings, quality of life is once again on the positive upswing.

How To Stay Healthy When You Have Diabetes

How To Stay Healthy When You Have Diabetes

The health effect of Diabetes can be devastating if not correctly managed and can even lead to death. If you want to stay healthy there are many different steps you must take to help the body cope. In this article, I will talk about all the things that you need to know about along with offering advice on how to cope.

What Is Diabetes?

The first step you need to take to stay healthy when you have diabetes is to fully understand what diabetes is. By learning about the disease and different types, you will know the best course of action to take.

The two most common types are Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is when the body is not making insulin. This requires an insulin injection to be able to maintain safe levels and close monitoring of glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is less severe as it is when the body uses or make insulin well. Depending on the level it may require insulin or pills to manage the disease.

Glucose Levels

To stay healthy when you have diabetes you will need to manage your glucose levels. This is the amount of sugar in the blood and by getting this correct it will have many health benefits. You will feel less thirsty and tired, heal better, more energy, less bladder or skin infections. If you get it wrong it can have devastating effects such as a stroke or heart attack, going blind, nerve damage, gum and teeth problems and kidney problems.
